What is a Kakapo?
Kakapo (
Strigops habroptilus) are an oddity in the parrot world. Flightless, nocturnal, and with a distinct musty smell, they are more like a small
mammal than a parrot. The kakapo is also the world’s heaviest parrot, weighing 2-4 kgs at maturity. Kakapo are members of the Strigopidae family of parrots, which are found only in
New Zealand. They are critically endangered, with only 122 individuals living in 2010.
